James Price

James Price, 88, years old passed away on Thursday, January 1st at Astria Toppenish Hospital. James was born November 1st, 1935, in Lubbock, Texas to Colonel and Monie Price. He had seven siblings. In search of work, the family would move around and finally settled in the Yakima Valley. He was a graduate of David High School. During his youth, he played several sports but basketball was his favorite. He was also an amateur boxer. Several people have shared their stories regarding his boxing skills. At 17 years old, the story is, my dad was eating an ice cream cone and saw this beautiful woman that caught his eyes (Catherine 24 years old) and went up and introduced himself. That meeting led to a short period of dating and 56 years of marriage until her death in 2008. Daddy worked in many different jobs including picking cotton, cutting grapes, asparagus, and other type of field work. He also worked at Stockley in Zillah, the sugar beet factory in Toppenish, and the Toppenish Del Monte for 21 years. Many remember my dad for his big smile and laughter. He was a simple man. He didn’t have much but what he had, he was happy and content. He made sure he took care of what he had. Daddy would always tell us: “If you see something broken or starting to wear out, it’s better to take care of the problem while it is small rather than wait until it gets worse.” I remember growing up, he would sit down in his chair and play the harmonica for us. He also loved to play checkers. He taught myself and his grandkids how to play. (No mercy though no matter how old you were. If you lost just consider it a learning experience.) As he aged, it was hard to watch him as he forgot how to play checkers. Daddy did well taking care of us but the best gift he gave me was to teach me about our loving God, Jehovah. Daddy passed away knowing what the Bible tells us about death and the scripture promises of a resurrection to paradise here on earth. On September 22, 2001, Daddy dedicated his life to Jehovah as one of Jehovah’s Witness. Part of that dedication is sharing from the Bible, God’s promise of a new heaven and a new earth (Isaiah 65:17-19). He faithfully did so along with other brothers and sisters from the Toppenish Congregation. Talking to individuals in the community and sharing not only the Bible based hope but also that scripture promise for the future. A couple of scriptures daddy enjoyed was Revelation 21:3-4, where it says he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, death will be no more the former things have passed away and Psalms 37:11-29 here the Bible tells us that one day mankind will live on earth in an abundance of peace forever. Daddy was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings, and his wife Catherine. He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie, three grandchildren Nicholas (Tina), Tanisha, Julian, six great grandchildren, Dominique, Nathaniel, Angelo, Cierra, Andrea, and Rosali, and several nieces and nephews.
