On May 10, 2016, Jose (Joe) “Pop” Ortiz passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones. Pop is survived by his wife of 45 years, Maria, his children Mario Ortiz, Jose Fernando Ortiz (Monica Bueno), Annabel Burch (Chad Burch), Anita Ortiz Little (Ben Little). His grandchildren Fabian Burch, Daniel Jr. Ortiz, Jazzmin Ortiz, Josiah Ortiz, Marisa Ortiz, Ashlee Burch, Kayla Ortiz, Sara Burch, Baron Little, and great grandchildren Oliver Jr. Sanchez, and Norman Jr Ceja. Also his siblings Mary Esqueda, Lala Ortiz, Rosie Sanchez, Isabel Vela, Jorge Ortiz, Alberto Ortiz, Yolanda Salinas, Diana Payne, Eloy Ortiz. Pop was born to Fernando and Guadalupe Ortiz on December 22, 1951 in Elsa, Texas. The family moved to Satus, Washington in 1962 and then later moved to Toppenish in 1969. Pop attended school in Granger until he began his work life in 1966 working for Shinn & Sons. Pop found great success and purpose, and was eventually promoted to the role of foreman, in which he resided until his retirement in 2010. Pop met the love of his life in the summer of 1969, Maria Loera. They were married in 1970. Together they raised 5 children, Mario, Jose Fernando, Annabel, Daniel, and Anita. Pop had a light hearted, fun loving nature, which made him the life of any party. His happiest times were hosting BBQ’s at his house with his family. Pop had an adventurous spirit, which took him on many long road trips driving his convertible mustang and RV. Pop also had an infinite love for all things mechanical. He was an avid mechanic, welder, carpenter, and electrician. Pop could do it all, and there was nothing he could not fix or build. And if he was posed with a challenge, he taught himself how to do it. During retirement, he especially enjoyed getting out of the house and socializing at the Legends Casino. He loved frequenting the restaurant, Old Town Station and eating his favorite breakfast of waffles (always filling every square with butter and syrup) watching wrestling at home, and loved home improvement projects. Pop loved his family dearly. Some of his favorite things were hiding Easter eggs for his family, cutting the turkey at Thanksgiving, and watching the faces of his grandchildren as they opened their presents at Christmas. Pop was preceded in death by his brothers Daniel and Raymond, his sister Anita, his son Daniel, and daughter Maribel, finally by his father Fernando and mother Guadalupe. A viewing will be on Thursday May 12th 2016, from 4-6 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, followed by a rosary. Funeral service will be conducted on Friday May 13th, 2016 at 10a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Pop will be laid to rest at Elmwood Cemetery in Toppenish, WA.
