Lindsey H Selam

March 22, 1951 - August 1, 2017

Lindsey Howard Selam (66) passed away in Yakima, WA, on Tuesday August 1, 2017. Lindsey was born in Toppenish, WA on March 22, 1951, to Howard and Delsie Selam. Lindsey was raised in Satus, WA, he grew up with his siblings. He attended the Granger School District and graduated from Granger High School in 1970. He then went on to Utah State University and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in History and teaching certificate in 1980. He attended classes at Heritage University where he worked towards a Master’s Degree. Lindsey married the love of his life, Debbie Lamebull, on September 3, 1977. They settled down and raised their two children, Aaron Selam and Cecelia Selam, in White Swan where they became strong members of the community. Lindsey worked for the Yakama Nation as the Yakama Youth Treatment Director. He also worked with youth through various other programs including Camp Chaparral and various school districts. He helped as a grant reader for the federal government in Washington D.C. He was also a strong volunteer within the community serving as the Chairman and treasurer for the National Indian Days Committee, as well as working with the White Swan JOM committee, coaching the Running Rebels basketball team, and refereeing basketball with the Washington State Officials Association. Lindsey also enjoyed attending and participating in the Pow-Wow circuit. He participated in pow-wows as a Fancy dancer. He drummed with the Northwest Medicine Horse Singers and Umatilla Intertribal. He participated with his siblings and family around the country in Pow-Wow demonstrations. He enjoyed meeting and visiting all of his friends and family on the Pow-Wow Trail. Lindsey was interested in all sports especially basketball; he enjoyed attending the basketball games around the valley every year to watch his nieces and nephews play. Lindsey’s main team was the Seahawks, he attended at least one game a year. Lindsey is survived by his wife, Debbie (Lamebull) Selam of White Swan, his son, Aaron (Mariah) Selam of Toppenish, his daughter, Cecelia (Jon) Selam of Durango, Colorado, his brothers; Lonnie (Theresa) Selam, Sylvester Selam, and Vincent Selam, his sisters; Bernita Bennett and Mardell Wallahee, numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and grandnephews/nieces whom he considered all of them his grandchildren. Lindsey was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Howard and Delsie Selam, his brothers Gabriel “Tush” Selam and Terry Selam. Dressing services will be held August 3, 2017 at 2pm at the Toppenish Longhouse (Toppenish, WA) and will be followed by overnight services. Sunrise burial services will be at Toppenish Creek Cemetery (White Swan, WA) on August 4, 2017. Friends can send condolences at www.toppenishfunerals.com.
