Sophia C (Olney) Blodgett

December 29, 1924 - September 19, 2016

Sophia C. (Olney) Blodgett "Wa'xamnuut" (91) of White Swan passed away at her home on Monday September 19, 2016 surrounded by her family. Sophia was born on December 29, 1924 to Oscar and Frances (Smith) Olney in White Swan. She graduated from White Swan High School in 1944 and worked as a Rosie Riveter at Boeing during WWII. Sophia married William "Bill" Blodgett on October 26, 1947 in Yakima. Together they owned and operated a cattle operation which they raised Hereford cattle. She worked for 27 years for the Mt. Adams School District retiring as head cook in 1990. She worked as a relief lookout for the Yakama Nation Fire Management in her retirement for a few years. She enjoyed horseback riding, sewing, camping, picking huckleberries, basket weaving, meeting with her classmates the first Monday of the month and especially the family gatherings at her home. She was an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation and devout member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Her other memberships were the Klickitat River Cattle Association, Washington School Food Service Association and the Basket Weavers Association. Sophia is survived by her daughter, Virginia Blodgett of Toppenish; three sons, William Gale (Linda) Blodgett of Redmond, OR; Russell G. Blodgett of White Swan and Vincent M. (Monica) Blodgett of White Swan; twelve grandchildren, Shelly, Cecelia, Michael, Zander, Amelia, Cheyne, Ashley, Gary, Theron, KC, Myranda and Tadd; 22 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Jane Town of Vancouver, WA and Frances Schneider of Toppenish and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Elmer, Peter, Oscar and Hiram. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 7PM Wednesday September 21, 2016 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10AM Thursday September 22, 2016 at the church with interment to follow at Reservation Community Memorial Park west of Wapato.
