Monica J Teo

Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, aunty and friend Monica J Teo was born in Shelton, Washington. She was an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation and descendant of the Skokomish tribe. She grew up in Portland, Oregon and graduated from Washington High School. After graduating high school, she attended Bacone Indian College and returned to the Yakama reservation. Mom worked briefly for our tribe and then moved on to work at Stusser Electric for over ten years. She then began her career at the Yakama Nation Indian Health Clinic, where she dedicated 30 years of her life to helping her tribal people. This was where she created so many lasting friendships with co-workers, patients, and colleagues from within the health field. Many times after mentioning her name, people would speak kind words about Mom and her willingness to help those in need. Mom also took the time to get to know you, addressing emotional and family needs alongside their health care needs. She was known for her natural gift to serve others with sincere compassion and a smile. Despite her own sickness and being in the hospital, she worried about and spoke of her patients often. She would receive numerous calls/texts from people and she still tried to help them the best she could. Aside from loving her job, in Mom’s younger years, she enjoyed playing in basketball and softball tournaments. She even had a short stint as a talented roller skater. Mom would travel with friends and relatives to play around different reservations while carting us girls with her. Her love for sports didn’t end with her, Mom poured her heart into supporting our family, friends and especially her grandkids in any sport they participated in. She attended so many games, tournaments, school events to support her grandkids and relatives just to show her love and support. Oftentimes she would want to watch a game after ours was done and we’d tell her “Grandma, you don’t even know these people.” and she would figure out some way to justify watching the game, “That’s so-and-so’s grandkid” or “they’re from Wapato”. There were many days, nights, and weekends where she would attend baseball, basketball, volleyball, football and fastpitch games to watch her grandkids and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Mom was so proud of her grandkids and their accomplishments and it showed if you knew her. Mom had also enjoyed finding a good yard/estate sale. She always had us stopping at Second-Hand stores or Goodwill stores, always on the hunt to find items for family and friends. Along with her hobby of discount shopping, her favorite place was a casino, she had a wide collection of players cards. If you didn’t see her at work or a game, she was at the casino. Her grandkids often said she could make friends with anyone, she was the type of person to start up a conversation with random people in an elevator! Most of all, mom taught us the importance of love, kindness, compassion, dedication, hard work and acceptance not only with her words, but the way she carried herself everyday. We had many friends and family that lived with us or stayed with us in our home. Mom also made sure that we visited far and near to stay in contact with family and friends. Her absence will leave a significant void in our hearts. She is preceded in death by her father, John Everett Teo and Dan Logie, mother, Beverly Hawk-Logie. Her brothers, Monty Teo, Johnny Teo, Ralph Logie, Joe Logie. Her sister Gwendolyn Teo and granddaughter, Savannah Pachpe-Alvarado. She is survived by her daughters Sandra, Vanessa, Sonya, and Aretha. Her sisters Carrie Teo, Carmen Teo, Michelle Teo, and Pebbles Teo. Her brothers Stanley Teo, Harris Teo, and Fred Logie. Grandchildren, Anthony, Allyson, Fayedawn, Quinese, Shace, Brook, Brett, Owen, Natalya, and Leonard. Her great grandchildren Ninu and baby. Many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. We would like to thank the Virginia Mason doctors, nurses and Toppenish nursing home staff that cared for her. They were all saddened by her loss and took great care of her and our family these past nine months as she battled. They were all amazed at how strong of a woman she was during all her pain and suffering. Thank you to all the family and friends who kept her in their thoughts and prayers.
